Why Ireland

Ireland is the ideal destination of a Study Abroad Program for many reasons:

  • Ireland is consistently listed as one of the safest countries in the world, ranking in the top 15 in the Global Peace Index 2019, as well as ranked as being the 12th most peaceful country.
  • Ireland is a famously welcoming English-speaking modern country. Ireland may be a small country, but it looms large in the minds of many around the world.
  • Ireland is easily accessible. Not only will you be able to take advantage of everything Ireland has to offer, but you will also have Europe on your doorstep. With the UK within easy reach and the west coast of Europe just a few hours away by plane, travel opportunities are vast (in between your studies of course). It’s also worth mentioning that North and South America and Canada sit just across the Atlantic.
  • Ireland is ranked in the top 10 for education (IMB World Competitiveness Ranking 2019) and provides students with one of the best education systems in the world
  • Education in Ireland challenges students to think for themselves and encourages innovation in students; you will be both challenged and enchanted by time spent in Connemara.
  • With one of the best education systems in the world, beautiful surroundings and diverse culture, the Republic of Ireland makes a unique and rewarding study abroad destination.
  • It is the perfect place to develop your independence and immerse yourself in a different world-renowned culture, lifestyle, history and heritage. You can dive deep into another culture!
  • GROW – expand your horizons and challenge your assumptions!
  • Ireland’s ancient castles, museums, impossibly green landscapes, timeless natural features and cosmopolitan cities are waiting to be explored. You can even expand your adventures to.
  • There are many great career opportunities in Ireland for international graduates due to its appeal to multinational businesses, including well-known companies such as eBay, Skype and Microsoft. Most universities, including UCD, offer internship opportunities that are a great way to gain real experience in the workplace that can prove invaluable when job-hunting.
  • When it comes to post-study work, Ireland is the only English-speaking country in Europe that offers post-study work visas to international graduates, making it an attractive destination to kick-start your career. Once you find full time employment after studying in Ireland, you will be eligible to apply for residency – over 13,500 first residence permits were issued to higher education students in 2017 (European Migration Network).
  • You will be welcomed into Ireland by some of the most hospitable people you will ever meet and you will soon discover that the Irish are proud of their country, culture and traditions. Experience the feast day of Ireland’s Patron Saint with Saint Patrick’s Day, listen to traditional Irish music, watch Irish dancing, take part in Irish sports such as Gaelic football or get lost in Irish myths and legends.
  • You will gain a wealth of career-enhancing skills and experiences that will help you become more employable from studying abroad. You’ll be able to develop some key transferable skills that you can take to any job such as communication, project management and language, as well as make global connections and become more confident – things valued by employers around the world.
  • Ireland offers a great balance of city life and country life. Major cities in Ireland are smaller than other European capitals but offer everything you need (from shops and restaurants to entertainment and transport) and are vibrant and full of unique history.
  • Ireland is a small island country with a rich and varied history. While it is a “Western” and English-speaking nation with some of the historical factors, traditions, and values shared with other Western nations, ours included, there are significant differences. Studying in Ireland provides students with the opportunity to live and travel abroad in order to experience these differences, while at the same time earning a full semester’s academic credit.

Why Connemara, County Galway?

  • Connemara’s magical combination of ancient history and contemporary culture makes it a great location for a Study Abroad program. Our students have access to the best elements of country, city and village/rural living due to our location in Ros a’ Mhíl, County Galway in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht. Connemara will become a second home for the students.
  • Quite apart from being a region of great beauty, Connemara is a major Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking district) and is endowed with a rich folk tradition. In Irish, “An Gaeltacht” refers to the few areas in Ireland in which Irish is the community language. In these areas, people work to preserve the vitality of the language and all aspects of Irish Culture as a living breathing community. It is a modern, thriving connected rural community rich in cultural heritage. The village of Ros a’ Mhíl, therefore, provides the ideal location for immersion in Irish life and culture in a natural environment.
  • Galway, the “cultural heart” of Ireland, is cosmopolitan city with a thriving culture and is within accessible distance. Maybe it’s the stunning coastline, or the rolling green hills, or the misty, mysterious weather; whatever the cause, the small city of Galway has long drawn musicians, artists, writers, and creative types to its charming streets. As you study abroad in Connemara, you’ll enjoy the thriving theater and music scenes, browse Galway city’s bustling markets, enjoy the many festivals and feast on legendary seafood fresh from Galway Bay. Head to the Atlantic Sea for rowing, kayaking, and wind surfing. Whatever adventures you choose in Galway, you’ll love immersing into Irish life near this quaint university town.
